There has been lots of talk about birthday parties around our house lately. And even though both Zed and I have February birthdays, 99.95% of the birthday babble has been about Zoey's upcoming 6th Birthday Party Extravaganza.
In August.
Every day I hear "I'm going to have my birthday party at _______ this year" or "I want to _______ for my birthday." The locations and activities change daily (sometimes hourly). I've tried showing her the calendar and explaining just how far away her birthday is, but it doesn't help.
Yesterday, Zoey, Zed, and I were sitting at the table having a snack. Zoey and I were talking about the words Zed has been saying lately. And then Zoey said, "I wish he would say my name. That's all I want for my birthday -- for Zed to say, 'Zoey.'"
Before the tears of sadness and pride could begin streaming down my face, my cynical side took over. "So if we can teach Zed to say your name, we don't have to get you anything for your birthday?"
"Oh no," she replied without hesitation. "That's what I want Zed to get me for my birthday. You and Mommy still have to buy me presents."
That's what I thought.
